Our Governing Body is the school's accountable body. It approves the budget and examines the school finances. It makes sure the right staff are in the right place and appoints the Headteacher. It sets strategic direction, policies and aims and reviews progress and objectives. It asks the right questions of the senior staff so that the school runs efficiently and provides the best possible education for every child.

As in every school our governing body ensures it has a strong focus on 3 core functions; ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction; holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils; and overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent. Our governors bring a wide range of experience and expertise to the role and consist of representatives from Surrey County Council, Reigate and Banstead Borough Council, parents and the staff. Other members are co-opted for their particular expertise.

Some of the work is delegated to two sub-committees; Children and Learning and Resources but all governors share a collective responsibility. The full Governing Body meets at least twice per term and a public copy of the minutes is available in school, or can be requested from the Clerk to the Governing Body ( The governors make regular visits to the school and are represented at many school functions.

Each phase of the school has ‘adopted’ governors who take a particular interest in the work of the classes and visit as often as possible. The Governing Body at Shawley is committed to ensuring that the education provided is of the highest standard and that all the children achieve their potential.

The Governing Board of Shawley Community Primary School agrees that Full Governing Board meetings will be “open.” Open meetings are meetings of the Full Governing Board to which members of the general public, including school staff and parents, can request, in writing, to attend as observers.  Requests to attend the "open" part of these meetings must be sent to the Clerk to the Governing Body no less than 14 days before the date of the meeting.  Please click here to view the Open Meetings Protocol adopted by Shawley.
